"The award for Best Boat Illumination of 2020 must surely go to the Christmas Lights show at South Dock in London's Rotherhithe in December.
This was the third year the light show has been laid on, and each time the aim is to surpass the previous display.
It is organized by Marine Canvas Hut, a small marine covers and upholstery business funded six years ago by Miryam Brizuela. They operate out of a shipping container on the dockside and both live on boats nearby.
Like so many, the sisters had a rocky year. They normally spend the spring creating covers and upholstery for boats all over London, but when the pandemic struck they switched to making safety products to combat the virus instead.
"At first, we designed visors for the staff at the marina", said Miryam. When Southwark Council saw their designs, their put in an initial order for 1,000 visors. Neighbors and colleagues started gathering at the studio to help and the sisters launched a crowdfunding page to pay for raw materials. They eventually raised £7,422 and produced over 10,000 visors over the course of the last summer." "
